Can you imagine if enjoy both Chinese and Western-style cuisine on the same table. It sounds oddly, for Chinese and Western cuisine belong to different school, but they would meet in tea restaurants in Hong Kong.

Tea restaurant , or Cha chaan teng ( 茶餐廳 ) in Cantonese, serves to distinguish itself from Western restaurants that provide water to customers instead of tea. The "tea" in the name refers to the inexpensive black tea, not the traditional Chinese tea served in traditional dim sum restaurants and teahouses (茶樓 caa4 lau4). Moreover, some cha chaan tengs prefer the use of the word "café" in their names.
The "tea" may also refer to those tea drinks, such as the Hong Kong-styled milk tea and cold lemon tea, which are very popular in cha chaan tengs. The older generations in Hong Kong use yum sai cha (飲西茶 lit. "Drinking Western tea"), when dining in these restaurants in contrast with yum cha.

Now, we arrived at Sha Tin Center. Sha Tin was the second batch of satellite towns, or new town, to be built in the New Territories, on land reclaimed from the sea.
People lives live used to Tai Po Market by train or ferry, when they want go shopping. On 1960s, a new market shaped there, this is so called Sha Tin Market, residents never go to Tai Po for purchase.. Unfortunately, Typhoon Wanda in 1962 and a blaze in 1979 damaged the market severely.

To Shatin by Green Taxi

Last time, we arrive in Hong Kong along Chung Ying Street. And today, let’s go to Sha Tin ( 沙田 ) by a green taxi.

In Hong Kong, you may see taxi in 3 colors which run in different areas: red in urban area including Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, green in New Territory and blue on Lantau Island. The Government in the 1960s defines the service areas of the three types of taxis. The need for the three different types was to avoid clustering of taxis in the more populated/profitable areas of the territory, and a shortage in others. All three types of taxis serve Hong Kong International Airport and Disneyland.

We drive along Sha Tau Kok Road, Turn left toward Jockey Club Rd, Slight left to merge onto Route 9 , and went toward to Sha Tin Center Town. About 30mins later, we arrived in Sha Tin! (To be continued)

Now, we are in the New Territory in Hong Kong. I’m hungry at the moment; let’s have something yummy here. A friend of mine suggest me never miss Big Bowl Feast here.

Big Bowl Feast , or Poon choi ( 盆菜 ) in Cantonese, is a typical type of Hakka cuisine. It may be also found in different places in Hong Kong, served in basins wooden, porcelain or metal.

Big Bowl Feast origins at a feast when in late Song Dynasty (1270s), the emperor and his loyal ministers retreat here from the trace of Mongol troops. Local villagers serve the emperor for the dinner. They cannot find enough bowls for dishes, so basins were take as containers for feast.

What can we find in the Big Bowl Feast? Let me have a look, pork, duck, prawn, crab, dried mushroom, squid, pigskin, and so on. It Looks so delicious.

It is often served during religious rituals, festivals, special occasions and wedding banquets in open area of villages. From the 1990s, Poon Choi became popular among urban dwellers and can also be enjoyed at many Cantonese restaurants in the autumn and winter or on special occasions throughout the year.

When people come to Hong Kong from Shenzhen, they would choose Lowu ( 羅湖 ) checkpoint. But today, let’s have another choice, turn east, go to Chung Ying Street ( 中英街 ) !

Chung Ying Street, literally means Sino-Anglo Street in Chinese. As we all know , Hong Kong used to be a Crown’s colony, Britons expanded its colony for 3 times . The street was a river in 1899. British use the high water mark as the border. The river was too shallow at the section of Sha Tau Kok ( 沙頭角 ) . It dried before the coming of World War II. The residents on both dried river sides then erected their shops to trade. The dried river then renamed to Chung Hing Street ( 中興街 ), and later renamed to Chung Ying Street. The town of Sha Tau Kok flourished for that period of time. After World War II, with large influx of refugees from mainland China, British decided to close the border and the town fell into the Closed Area. The border town declined since then.

Chung Ying Street was once a famous place for shopping. In the 1990s, when China is still closing to the world, the tourists from the mainland visit to buy foreign goods, majorly watches, clothes and the jewelry. However, the prosperity has declined in the last few years due to the policy that most people can apply to visit Hong Kong directly. Nowadays, Chung Ying Street is transforming to a sight-seeing place of its history. In fact, the mainland government has built a museum introduce the history of Chung Ying Street and strike to attract tourists again.
